Namastey sabai jana lai,
I am on F1 visa and wanted to fill tax returns. Does Nepal have a tax treaty with the U.S. ? I work on campus so I have a W -2 form. I also have a wife here on F2 visa so are there any forms to be filled besides the details of W-2 form ? Please guide me.
Thanks a lot.

Nepal doesn't have tax treaty so for 5 calendar years you cannot claim dependents, and you cannot take the standard or itemized deduction. You can take only $3700 as exemption. Well people do file 1040 and get more money back, but if you get audited then you have to pay the money back with fine. I am not trying to disappoint you but that is the truth and I have been in your shoes.

Thank you very much Sparty.Your reply helps a lot. I will rather not try to claim returns in which I might be fined. So, I will only submit W-2 details. dherai dherai dhanyawad.

I heard you can itemize and get more than exepmtion. I knew a gentleman in UNH used to itemize when he was F1 stuednt.
tution fee
books , stationery
related expnses
(not mandetory health insurance).
which will jack up over 3700 and able to get more refund.

People have even filed tax return as resident while in F1, that doesn't mean one shud do the same.
The best is file 1040NR EZ form, follow instructions and u will be good.

I guess , you have already filed and now it does not matter to you. It matter to the originator and we focus on maximizing the refund following the IRS rules.
Very few people use itemized deduction.
Mr. CPAs and Hari dai, what is your opinion? Never head of Itemize on 1040 NR filing ??
