Ashu-dai,

What are the options on table for you to stick to your past decisions against those Maoist cadres fired earlier? Are you going to reinstate them back into your orgnization as mentioned in MyRepublica.com?

Nepe-Pire-newStudent:

Interestingly, you three are alike. Why are you afraid of Gyanendra and Paras Shah? Do you really think that they will be reinstated back to palace? I don't think they are of our worry. We should be worried of Prachanda's erratic statements.

Ashu,

I don't want to muddle current situation with debate on Kamaiya issues or secularism. We can talk about that later too. My sympathy laced with khuchching would be a pure sympathy/empathy and outrage if Himal would somehow ,after emerging from the current trauma, does the following:

(1) Go all out against the likes of Mohan Baidya. To hell with the democracy, this man is the most dangerous man for our future. Jammarkattel is a small pawn compared to what this man is. He still harps on 'naya janawaad', which, if interpreted directly, is "In my regime, you all journos will be f---ed up." What else you want from this guy, right? Or are we gonna wait for him and his goons to be strong enough to hit at us, so that we can hit back at them with some damage on us?

(2) Boycott the Goebbles. No sympathy for Aruna Uprety, Hari Roka , Khagendra Sangraula, Devendra Pandey and so on. Aruna didi, god bless her, has occasionally spoken against Maoists, but in front of a few chosen foreigners, she almost argued with me about how great the Maoists were. I respected her, and I didn't argue with her because I didn't want two Nepalese to fight in front of a few foreigners. If these people have some merits, then give them some respect at that place, but not as a political commentators.

(3) Boycott the royalists. It has been too much of a pain to see royalists still hanging out. It gives me a sense of binary outcome (Maoists ko bikalpa royalists), as if a few vultures are awaiting to take the democracy away. Democracy is a benign system, but like every good things, it has to be protected. We were so wrong in assuming that just because democracy is a good thing, it can operate on autogear.

(4) Wage a campaign to emasculate labor unions, protect individual properties and raise the hell about the plights of Maoist pidit.

(5) No coverage for Shivapuri, unless similar coverage for Madi massacre and the plights of Maoists pidit are written on the same issue with similar prominence.

(6) Support the parties that have never attacked press. Where is the reward system? Pite pani maobadi nai hero banaune chalan is the worst thing.

Finally, you and Himal have earned my respect in the last few months despite the occasional fallibility. Don't let the patrakars stop at the karbahi of two goons. Even if it means losing a lot of money, let's go after Maoist criminals, expose them, wage a 'shock and awe' propoganda campaign, so that in the next election, they don't get any vote. If this means all press people, all pucca nagarik samaj has to come together, let's find a way to do that.

May god pashupatinath keep you safe from future attackers.

Biharibabu:

I agree to join with you regarding the corrupt media and how it gives incorrect information to mislead general public.  Almost all of my friends agree that many people even in UN and many other non profits are communists—an example being Ian Martin.   We must work together to drag this PM to ICJ.  And let the Maoists keep doing the good work of beating journalists, and let the good news coming.  Nepali media must take the blame for the current situation.  After all, these YCL goons were their “heroes” and these media owners worshiped Prachanda as their God.

It is good to see that you are in HLS.  I got letters of acceptance from HLS, Yale, and Columbia.  I am not sure which one to choose.  In either case, I will have to quit working which is sad because I am currently an IB Analyst.  The lost income for these three years will exceed $400K. The decision for MBA is still awaited.  Most of my friends who are already successful attorneys say Yale.  What is your opinion about HLS?  I prefer NYU and Yale.  Please email me.

This topic should not disappear from the homepage as it is very important for us to realize what's going on. Down with Maoist hooliganism.

Pire From the sounds of it, you look like nothing but A SOUR GRAPE(who think its okey for maoist to beat up, extort, kidnap rich and wealthy people). There sure are thousands of people victimised by YCL my family(by the way we not not rich or well to do) being one of them. But you don't see me being giddy about anyone else being attacked. And you are an educated person ? Yestai PIRE JUSTO GADHA haru ley garera holaa Nepal ko gatii yestoo bhaako.

Ilapen,

Though it's (perversely) fascinating to have the Prime Minister of the land take such an interest in one company's personnel decision, I would say that HM's stance on the matter is cystal clear, honest and straightforward.

My colleagues have publicly said this on TV and radio in Nepal, and I second this:

"That HM did NOT break a single law of the land when -- with enormous sadness and patience but with no sense of joy -- it let go of those 18 non-patrakar staff members."

Like the 34 other patrakar and non-patrakar staff who left HM voluntarily earlier in July/Aug/Sept with the company-offered severance packages, and who have since found excellent jobs elsewhere, those 18 staff too were offered assistance to find jobs elsewhere.

They were offered more-than-the-legally-required (i.e. quite generous) severance packages; and they were told, with as much honesty and compassion possible, that the company, though immensely grateful for their services, could no longer afford to keep them on the payroll. They were even welcome to examine the books, and verify the truth for themselves.

I mean, what could anyone else have done under the circumstances?

It's perfectly fine for those staff to NOT like the company's decision. But the way for them to challenge that decision is to use a court of law.

[Personally and professionally, I fail to see why anyone who's capable in Nepal would want to hang around a company, especially after the company has told you that it no longer wanted your services . .  . but I digress!]

Still, in a democracy, this is how disputes are resolved: either through mutual understanding and/or through the judicial system. Disputes should NOT be settled by trading blows and punches and through vandalism, death threats and physical attacks by the unknown cadres of a known political party.

Let's see.

On some larger questions raised by various posters:

Pire and other thinking posters have raised some very difficult questions that Nepal’s politicos and civil society seem to be rather avoiding for their convenience at this point.

I admire these tough questions. However, I think what is more important is the answers- not the sentimental or ideal answers, but the cold and REALISTIC ones.

Here are what I think might be solution/answers to some of the questions raised here. I admit that mine too is full of idealism if not sentiments. However this is the best I could do. And oh yes, I will be repetitive to many of my older kurakanis. Bear with me on  that.

Justice to the victims of Maoist abuses and loot:

Nothing significant seem going to happen in any near future, primarily because the republican civil society which has the most political legitimacy and therefore leverages too, at this point of time, is totally obsessed with Maoist’s political successes. Formally unrepublican (or anti-republican) section of the civil society, on the other hand, does not have that kind of leverage at this point. So, Nepali “civil society”, at this point, is handicapped as far as opposing Maoist in any way is concerned.

Next, the political parties. First, NC. It is in such a complicated situation that does not allow it to do more than paying lip service to these causes or using it for self-serving purposes. First of all, NC has not recovered from it’s soul-draining defeat in the election. Even if otherwise, it has reasons to subdue rather than raise the issue of past abuses. If the matter is raised in a comprehensive way, GP Koirala’s abuses since early years of Maoist insurgency and Deuba’s part particularly in the abuses occurred during the “emergency period” are there to be accounted for.

UML, on the other hand, is in a cleaner and freer position to fight for these causes. But it won’t do it due to it’s own uncertain future. However, if somehow, UML could survive and got power, it is in the best position and with understandable incentive to bring all abusers to justice and deliver justice to all victims. Might that happen ? Yes, there is a possibility, no matter how weak.

Despite these political adversity and, if I can say so, betrayal of the elite civil society at this moment, I believe that the time of justice shall come. It could be legal justice, it could be moral justice or even poetic justice or combination of all. But it should come.

Basically the abuse is so widespread and victims so numerous, it is not going to be lost from social memory for next 2-3 decades. So all it needs is a maukaa.

I can think of three such maukaas.

One, which now seems pretty unlikely, though, is the miraculous political-moral transformation of Maoists. There was a hope among super-optimist section of certain political pundits that, a super-generous opportunity such as victory in election despite all the abuses/excesses and destruction, not to mention defying all political pundit’s opposite suggestion, that Nepali people offered to Maoist might eventually open their third eye to see how desperate Nepali people are for some god damned peace and a chance to pick up the pieces and move forward while anything better than the “old Nepal”, if indeed happens, would be a bonus. And in such an intense enlightenment, Maoist might come up with ways to heal the would of people, fill the gap of leadership and drive the nation on a long awaited path of semblance and whatever progress possible. Maoist activities of past 8 months shows that Maoist either does not have that third eye or it is going to take infinity to open it. I am not sure what is going through the mind of Nepali voters who had voted for Maoists at this moment. Are they still hopeful ? Are they still patient ? I can’t say with certainty. So unless a miracle happens to transform Maoist from a democracy fearing animal to a democracy loving one, from a butcher to a self-sacrificing prani and a healer and from a distributor of poverty to a creator of wealth within a short time before people’s hopes and patient run out, this avenue is closed.

Another avenue could be not less miraculous transformation of NC from an individual worshipping and lethargic party to at least minimally acceptable leading party for Nepali voters which I believe is only possible when at least  Koirala and Deuba are out of power or this world hence equipping it with some liberty and incentive not to defend the state abuses of the past. NC’s ideological identity with the rule of law and other fundamental premise of democracy (although imperfectly practiced or malpracticed so far) together with the awakened civil society’s (hopefully/presumably disillusioned with Maoist by then) awareness might open the door of legal justice.

So would the unconfused, spine-acquired and invigorated UML, if and when re-invented, do.

If none of these avenues opened, then, there is going to be divine intervention and all culprits are going to get what is called poetic justice. I am not sure about the exact form of that justice though.

Future of Maoist:

Radical Maoists are clearly misunderstanding or disregarding the popular mandate that was for peace, democracy and economy. The presumed moderate Maoists leadership does not have (could not gather) brains well versed in modern governance, management and smart economy. All they have is their own brain washed and combative cadres and some useless chakadibaj support of a few individuals from outside.

They certainly managed their bandook and political tactics very successfully. But  when it comes to governance, those skills are irrelevant or insufficient. Maoist needed to transform themselves into a whole new peace time party able to attract the necessary manpower, as I said, one well versed in modern governance, management and smart economy. They failed to transform. Worse, they even failed to wish to transform. The result is that they do not have a good team of experts with them yet. The result of which is that they are clueless as far as economic transformation of Nepal is concerned. Prachanda has been saying that he could not do much because of the lack of co-operation from all sides (kaam garna diyenan !). He is telling the truth.

So, unless some miracle (transformation) happens, I do not see a bright future of Maoist.

Maoist is blowing up the opportunity Nepali people gave to them by not understanding that it had to undergo a painful transformation (as much painful as giving up radicalism and getting rid of or re-indoctrinating the brain-washed cadres !) in order to be able to carry out the popular mandate they have received from the election.

Gun, muscle and bluffs of bikas are not going to help Maoist. Nepali people will be constantly testing new options, no matter how dramatic it might look, until they find one that gives them they are waiting for- peace and prosperity. Maoist does not seem to be that party at least at this point, at least to me.

Ganatantra:

Ganatantra is no more an issue of dispute. It is already a national resolve at all levels. For those who still think monarchy was sustainable, useful or necessary, if realpolitik consoles in any way, the fact is that, in politics, to be successful is what matters. Monarchy in its traditional form did not make it. So mourn and get over it. Well, actually, ganatantra provides a whole new chance for monarchy to prove its relevance through a new form called dynasty politics doing well in many democracies. Gyanendra Shah is free to enter into politics. As a matter of fact, as a democratic candidate, Gyanendra Shah does not at all make an inferior candidate to GP Koirala or Puspa Kamal Dahal “Prachanda”. And that was one justification for ganatantra.

As for the report card of ganatantra, while ganatantra is still what it is supposed to be- a new national resolve, a tool to mainstream Maoist (incomplete yet, though) and an icon for Nepal’s social-political and economic transformation (largely unstarted yet, again), ganatantrabadis are not doing well.

The biggest shortcoming of the ganatantrabadis is that they are in an easy illusion/carelessness that their duty is to beat the monarchy to death and nothing else. Keep cursing, beating and even fear-mongering about the revival of monarchy samantabad and your duty is over ! Once Prachanda has made fun of NC and UML leadrs for keeping the attack on on the dead monarchy with the sound byte “mareko baagh ko jungaa ukhelirahechhan !” Today, both Prachada and republican civil society elites are doing the same, actually more ridiculous act, मरेर पनि कुहिसकेको बाघको कंकालको जुँगा उखेलिरहेका छन् !

I have been saying since the beginning of the pro-republican civil society’s andolan, in my private communication and in forums like this, that the society has three enemies to fight, not in priority of one to another, but simultaneously, and they are: (1) monarchy for it’s elimination, (2) NC/UML’s incompetent leadership and lack of internal democracy for making them competent enough to provide the leadership to the transformation of Nepal and, (3) Maoist violence and anachronistic ideology to mainstream them in the new republican mainstream being established.

(1) is finished and (2) and (3) are still relevant.

Conclusion

Pire,

यो बाथरुमकफीलाई चानचुने पात्र नठानम् । साझा अधिराज्यमा यो पूर्व अधिराजकुमार पारस शाह बराबरको हैसियत राख्‍दछ if you know what I mean. यसको verbal भटभटेलाई license to kill immunity प्राप्त छ ।

As far as I can see (and I don't claim to see or know much), Maoists are no democrats. Their idea of democracy is very different from how we understand the word. That's it. What I see here is a pattern similar to that of China during the 1930's and the 40's. There's a document, actually a speech that Mao delivered in Yanan on Arts and Culture and the Nepali maoists are actually following Mao's directive word-by-word, even when the Chinese themselves discarded in a long time ago.

Our journalists didn't see a pattern emerging when the Maoist controlled communications ministry awarded 5-6 awards to a movie based on Maoist insurgency, including the best movie of the year award. What does that mean, now our directors will be making more such movies, and the state actually encouraging propaganda movies. Brainwashing and controlling the media (forcefully, if it comes) is only the beginning. Name at least one communist p[arty/leader that supports free press?

There's already a Maoist propaganda program on NTV. NTV is slowly turning into MTV (Maoist TV). There's a Maoist propaganda program, asthaka sworharoo, and what's more, if you happen to watch it during afternoons, provided there's no load-shedding in your area, then you will be getting more than your fair share of revolutionary songs. Rakta-Kranti ko Jwalamukhi ma... is becoming more and more like our version of "The East Is Red."

What the Maoist leadership does not realize is: Maoism (there's no Maoism anyways, Mao himself denied having his own -ism) or Maoist thought or whatever you call it, didn't work even in China. Many scholars believe that the Chinese revolution was successful not because the majority Chinese turned communist overnight but because of Japan's invasion and Jiang's (Chiang's) failure to stop or resist the Japanese.

In Nepal too, many people joined the Maoist movement not because they understood "continious revolution" or "the right to rebel" but becuase they wanted a better life. They wanted employment oppurtunities and all. Now if tomorrow there's another movement that promises dui chaak daal bhaat to every Nepali, then many would be willing to join that movement and overthrow the Maoists. So its about time that the Maoists leadership including Baidhya and company realized that they need to work on the economy rather than destroy what's left of it, and create more employment oppurtunities.

Its always better to comment on revolution from abroad and its even more easier to say, look Nepal is going through a transition period and we cannot avoid some untoward/wanwanted incidents, but its another thing when you are experiencing those yourself. 12 hrs of powercuts!!! where are we heading? Ever though what it might lead to? Industrial output is already lowered, and now our agriculture is going to suffer. How are the farmers in Tarai going to irigate? We are losing six hours a day due to power cuts, and all these leaders do is Yap Yap Yap Yap Naya Nepal. Many industries are alreday closed, some are lookiung for buyers.. a sad picture actually. And Mr Bhattrai says he welcomes foreign investment. Who is going to invest when we have power cuts, and all-powerful unions?

Also, what Naya Nepal... one good thing about the Chinese leadership is it discourgaes nepotism, in Nepal its all nata-baad. Nepal Tourism Board, National Planning Commisson ... all have falano's dai, falano's bahini and falano's kaka.

There's no secuity, law and order or anything. People are kidnapped for ransoms, killed... highway blockades..patrakars get beaten up...welcome to New Nepal. We don't know what's more to come, so you folks there, sit back, relax and enjoy the show and occassionally lecture us on democracy and the importance of tyaag and balidaan straight out of your college textbooks, while we in Nepal suffer, get ebaten up and kidnapped for ransom.

Here is another instance where abuse of sajha policy kills the spirit of discussion. It was discussed few months back that you are not allowed to use F words or call other names and it's evident that bathroomcoffee thinks he is above any rules here in sajha.

I foresee an extreme right, which should not be undermined given our history of transition and alternatives seeking adventrures that is so wired up in the populace. The nationalistic furor and happenning in ground realities together with the Yin-Yang theory for balance of extreme left makes my foresight even more realistic. I see a sense of phobia here, it was for maobadis in the past with few symphatizers and now I find rajabadis being coined the same remarks. I for one with aspiration in heart to serve the nation find myself in the darkness, unpaid and unsure country, which surely gets me lip biting to read idiotic comments from so called elites lecturing their patrtitiosim from the comforts of their adopted lands. Friends come over, let us all work to build this country as it braces the tide of time, and for God's shake stop making holes of dislike, hatred and borrowing ashu's words "us vs them" scenario that will sink the boat and all that it encompases.

these are two contradictory statements to each other , what I have been calling  a drive by argument to the needy although I second the one `` successful is what matters´´.  Who knows what went through in the daily diplomatic undiplomatic world of politics as kings were silent all the time in the name of  ever increasing unpopular legacy while Prachanda was constantly yapping even when someone poke his nose inorder to elevate  ever hiding image in the name of transparency. Until we know the whole truth, benefit of doubt should be applied to both sides or better `` successful is what matters´´ to all. I despise excuses  without any consolation, period! let alone to pray miracle in the circles of intoxicated maoists.

Miracle has already happend in Nepal in my opinion to some extent, like propotional election outcome with exactly opposite anticipated results to related parties otherwise hawaldar Girija had already  stamped the country to so called ``jana ganatantra´´ with first election plan. Whoever the  perfomer is , shall be given the rest. Country may need it again for fast and furious forthcoming caste based republic Nepal, who knows ?

Mr. Truth,

If you read my piece in totality, you would see that my observation was that Maoists are lonely in terms of having a good team of technocrats.

A few months ago, at some public meeting, Prachanda was bluffing (as it appears now) that he has a team of brilliant experts and they are working out a chamatkari vision for Nepal’s economic transformation. I almost believed that. Months have passed, I do not see even a shadow of these mysterious experts in the vision Maoist has presented so far.

I have read both Planning Commission’s three year Interim plan (2007-10) and Nepal Government’s current policy and program and I do not see any indication of any new vision for Nepal. Everything is old-fashioned: empty slogans, wishful objectives and false dream.

I am amazed to see Prachada relying on the selling of the same false dream about hydro-dollar for our chamatkari bikas. Hydro-dollar has been already proved a myth. The cost of production of hydroelectricity in Nepal is 1.5 times higher than the same in India. Put that on top of our own domestic need and now already deeply rooted massive corruption in water (water-mafia). How far can our water take us to ?

Nepal needs a serious introspection of our natural resources, a serious search for alternative resources (for example, how about working towards turning Nepal into a center of excellence for education, finance or knowledge based technology ?). But for that, the first thing we need is the end of current anarchy, instillation of the culture of rule of law and creation of enough space for technocracy and end of partisan politicization of public institutions and so on.

Obviously, Maoist in it’s current political form and mindset is completely incompetent to the task. Even if there is some benevolence in one or two leaders (which I doubt), the whole leadership, cadres, PLA and YCL have communist fanaticism and Mafioso mindset. They repel any sound minded technocrat to hundreds feet away from Maoist.

And this is exactly what I was pointing to when I said Maoist is lonely and not getting cooperation from anybody. I was simply putting the blame on Maoist itself (for being unable to transform itself and attract technocrats to it).

So was my point about the loss of monarchy. The blame for monarchy failing to survive is on monarchy itself.

I do not see any self-contradiction in these straight forward statements of simple facts.

I see no difference between Prachanda and Nepe when it comes to bluffing.     Just like your own empty slogans, wishful objectives, and false dreams.  Are you sure you are not talking about yourself ?
