Richard Gere has provoked a huge row in India after he kissed Big Brother winner Shilpa Shetty in public.
The actor was in New Delhi to participate in an AIDS charity event, and kissed local star Shilpa on the cheek in front of a large audience.
People complained Gere had insulted Indian culture and traditions by holding a woman's face in his hands because such displays of affection are provocative........................................

Shetty later defended Gere during a press conference, saying, "It was not so obscene. I understand people's sentiments, but I don't want a foreigner to take bad memories from here. These extremist want to take India back in the RAMAYAN times... he he It ain't gonna happen. Its total hypocricy too I mean its ok for Bollywood actors to kiss ON LIPS these days and not Mr Gere ?

It was not just a hug and kiiss as it seems.
The three lawyers and those demonstrators who are making a big hue and cry over Gere's inappropriate behavior with Shilpa is based on the video coming up. Before this video, the accusers had never seen images of either of the Hollywood icon and the Bollywood hottie. They filed the complaint based on this seemingly horrible footage. Oh come one, for someone who is savvy enough to appreciate the taste of butter tea and understand the reverence a people have for their culture, this was definitely a dumb thing to do, even if it was well intended. If Richard Gere is that ignorant about Indian tradition so as to hold an Indian woman so intimately in full pubic glare and kiss her - mind you it was not a polite peck but a couple of smooches - then I have little sympathy for him.

And Shilpa Shetty cant seem to stay out of the headline - sheeesh, what's with this girl? :P :)

As for the charges against him, I doubt they will stick. He crossed a social/cultural line and not so much a legal one.

Just heard that some lawyers are filling a lawsuit against Richard Gere ? he he If that is the case then they should be filing a lawsuit against every BOLLYWOOD actor that has smooched on screen. THEY ARE DOING THIS BECAUSE HE IS AN AMERICAN(its ok for Indian to do it but not for an American to come smooch their Indian women). These fugging hindu extremists just needed an excuse to come out on the streets create TAMAASAA to be on the news thats all.

What's the big deal!
