measurement of mental health metrics such as usage of antidepressants
and rise or decline of psychotherapy patients
  5. Workplace Wellness: Indicated via direct survey and statistical
measurement of labor metrics such as jobless claims, job change,
    workplace complaints and lawsuits
  6. Social Wellness: Indicated via direct survey and statistical

rates, complaints of domestic conflicts and family lawsuits, public
    lawsuits, crime rates
  7. Political Wellness: Indicated via direct survey and statistical
measurement of political metrics such as the quality of local

Some of those weird facts and my interpretations:

About a third of all Americans flush the toilet while they're still
sitting on it.
It's a good practice, for sooner the filth is flushed away the less foul smell for the next person waiting outside. I call it "drop n' flush" policy.

A Woman's heart beats faster than a man's.
Next time I get confused whether a person is male or female I might have to feel that person's heart with one palm and feel mine with the other. It sure sounds like a perfect recipe for getting a bitch slap from a tom boy.

Even if you cut off a cockroach's head, it can live for several weeks.
God forbid but if the insect doctor says my pet cockroach has a terminal cancer and has only one week to live, then I will  definitely go ahead and cut off it head so that it will live longer.

The world population of chickens is about equal to the number of people.
The smaller the bodily size of a species is, the larger is its population except for humans. Think of millions of microbes on a piece of filth and limited number of gigantic elephants in the wild.

Every time Beethoven sat down to write music, he poured ice water over
his head.
He was not the only one. Bizarre habits of other genuises include:
The poet Friedrich von Schiller used to keep rotten apples under the lid of his desk, open it, inhale deeply and compose.
Colette first picked fleas from her cat, then wrote.
Voltaire used his lover's naked back as a writing desk.
It's said that Edgar Allen Poe wrote with a cat on his shoulder.
T.S. Eliot preferred writing when he had a head cold.

Bird droppings are the chief export of Nauru, an island nation in the western Pacific.
They make incredibly nutrient-rich manure.

Mosquitoes have teeth.
However, it's the female mosquito that sucks (your blood). No wonder they say the female of the species is more deadlier than the male.

27% of U.S. male college students believe life is "a meaningless existential hell."
It's that 27% that had difficulty getting laid (even in college).

Aztec emperor Montezuma had nephew, Cuitlahac, whose name meant "plenty of excrement."
Most likely that chap was able to devise a secret fiber-rich dietary formula for himself.

Thomas Edison was afraid of the dark.
Duh! Why do you think he invented the light-bulb in the first place?
Here is another instance when the adage, necessity is the mother of all inventions, held true. Dayton, Ohio was such a boring place to be living in that the Wright Brothers had to invent the airplane to get the hell out of there.

That phone thing about Bhutan is bullshit.... I have made phone calls IN Bhutan in 1980.

And that GNH thing about Bhutan is bullshit too. Nepal has tons of happiness as well,..... ask Prachandey. It depends on whose happiness is measured. What Bhutan has is gross National Happiness..... it is so gross because it is explicitly for one segment of the people. Happiness indeed.... one can smile and smile and be a villain!

  1. Economic Wellness: Indicated via direct survey and statistical measurement of economic metrics such as consumer debt, average income to consumer price index ratio and income distribution (Average income is a bullshit concept unless income disparity is taken into account (that is my opinion)....... Bhutan has billionaires as well as folks who forage for roots in the forest to quell hunger.... that does not mean other countries don't have similar situations, but this certainly does not make Bhutan the happiest)
  2. Environmental Wellness: Indicated via direct survey and statistical measurement of environmental metrics such as pollution, noise and traffic (Of course! Kick out one sixth of the population, move new ones into the area, empty land, and plant forest.... when selected human life becomes subordinate to random trees, happiness is a debatable concept....)
  3. Physical Wellness: Indicated via statistical measurement of physical health metrics such as severe illnesses (While the ruling elite fly to Bangalore, Vellore etc for routine medical check ups on government funds, villagers in critical conditions are carried on improvised stretchers by ten to twelve people over 50 to 100 kilometers to the nearest basic health unit which usually does not have a doctor attending..... happiest?)
  4. Mental Wellness: Indicated via direct survey and statistical measurement of mental health metrics such as usage of antidepressants and rise or decline of psychotherapy patients (Psychotherapy in Bhutan? You are kidding, right? It is jhakris, 'Pows' and lamas that handle such, and other medical issues in most parts of Bhutan.)
  5. Workplace Wellness: Indicated via direct survey and statistical measurement of labor metrics such as jobless claims, job change, workplace complaints and lawsuits (Workplace complaints and lawsuits? In Bhutan? Give us another few decades, if not centuries, to get there, ok. Please!)
  6. Social Wellness: Indicated via direct survey and statistical measurement of social metrics such as discrimination, safety, divorce rates, complaints of domestic conflicts and family lawsuits, public
lawsuits, crime rates (Discrimination... ever heard of "no-objection certificate"? you need to have a 'bhutanese look' to get anywhere.... discrimination is the everyday ritual of the ancient Bhutanese political and social system. And yes, you don;t look your boss in the eye.)
  7. Political Wellness: Indicated via direct survey and statistical measurement of political metrics such as the quality of local democracy, individual freedom, and foreign conflicts. (Local democracy? In Bhutan? individual freedom? I am not even giong to say anything here!)

No hard feelings, but someone's gotta say it.

We Bhutanese speak Nepali as it used to be spoken in Ilaam and Jhapa. Nepali enough? Oh yeah, lot more Nepali than the gibberish spoken around Ratna Park. We would look confused if you should walk up to us and say "Hett Kyaaa Jhyaaaau garyaaa!" because that is not Nepali enough for us.

(The term "Bhutanese" is parallel to "American." There is no American ethnicity, language or religion. Bhutanese are citizens of Bhutan, but there is no ethnic community or a racial group called Bhutanese. It is a population of approximately 700,000 people made up of as many as 14 different ethnic groups. There are some who still wear animal skin for clothes. There are some who dress up like Tibetans. There are some whose dialects have no scripts. There are some who are animists. It is a small panorama of colorful people. The government wanted to paint this patchwork of colors into all dull grey and hence the political problems and the eviction which some would like to gleefully characterize as 'they all got kicked out')

The most predominantly spoken language is Nepali. The southern plains is pure Nepali. In the north, especially the capital, most of the people understand Nepali. If you are new, lost and need to speak to a stranger in Thimphu, try Nepali. Chances are s/he will understand you and can answer you well.

Heerealone, you should watch out. She might call you to it when you let slip something in Nepali that you shouldn't. Any Bhutanese that gets as far as the US as a student understands Nepali, speaks it and even some Hindi. About 45% of the population of Bhutan used to be nepali and Nepali was taught in schools until as late as the late eighties when the attack on the culture tradition and language began.  With about 100,000 evicted, there are still close to 2 lakhs Nepalis in Bhutan. Two government ministers are Nepalis: Thakur Singh Powdyal as education minister and NL Rai as minister of communications. When I was a kid, there used to be a government-sponsored magazine called "Bhutan ko Pratibimba" replete with stories of ghosts and poems and random stuff. The government mouthpiece, Kuensel, is published in Nepali, Dzongkha and English. The BBS has radio programs in Nepali too. I am not sure about the TV since I have not watched Bhutanese TV yet. So, yes, Bhutan has as many Nepalis as there are people of Tibetan or Indo-Burman origin there.
