They will certainly ask for social security number. Some people give, some people don't . However it is safe. If you don't want to give SSN, tell them that you don't have SSN. They will then ask for other supporting documents to verify your identity and it takes a little longer time. Without SSN also, you can send money through those money transfers.

they will do wire transfer, so u can transfer ur money from ur bank account in US to any bank account in Nepal. About the rate, they will give NRB's Rate. you can check that in Kantipur or nepalnews.com

I tried Prabhu Money Transfer in NY to send some money to Kathmandu and I found them very effieicnt. Before that, I tried with Muncha.com but  their website wasn't working properly at that time.

As far as i know if  u have account in Standard and charterd bank u wont be charge anything. I would really like to have some kind of verification from anyone regarding the fee charged in nepal while sending money via wamu.

when you send money thru wamu, you are not charged any outgoing fee by wamu. however there is an intermediary bank involved. this bank is usually one of the global banks like citi, hsbc and american express. they will charge anywhere from $10 - $40 per transaction (not amount sent). various banks of nepal have accounts in these NY based intermediary banks where the money is deposited. so if you can match the bank in nepal with the intermediary bank, you may be able to save some money (not a whole lot). for e.g. himalayan bank has an account with citi NY. you go to wamu and do the wire transfer but when filling the form tell wamu that you want to use citi NY as the intermediary bank. you can acquire the intermediary bank's ABA, swift and nepali bank's account no there from the bank in nepal. if the wamu rep is knowledgeable, you can do it easily. i've trasferred a very large sum (more than a few thousand) once for only $10 'cause citi NY charged only that!

the bottom line, wamu & nepali bank do not charge any fee. NY intermediary bank charges a low fee if you ask the money to be sent to the account of the nepali bank in this intermediary bank.

MidwestDude

Do you know what is the intermediate bank here for Standard Chartered bank in Kathmandu? Then I need to goto Wamu and tell them that I want to use this particular bank as the intermediary, right?

Do I need to get the swift code and what is the ABA #?
