NEW DELHI: In what could cause a serious setback to efforts by India and others to restore democracy in Nepal, the US is moving quickly to restore military supplies to the Himalayan kingdom. An angry India is believed to have conveyed its displeasure to the US.

Authoritative sources in the government told DNA that a three-member American defence team is in Kathmandu presently assessing the requirements of the Royal Nepal Army for fighting Maoist insurgency. A senior official here said the “US is set on restoring military supplies to Nepal.”

When contacted, the official spokesman for the Ministry of External Affairs refused to comment on the developments. India and the US have recently begun to drastically differ over Nepal, especially on Maoists. The difference flows out of American view of Maoists as terrorists and India's belief that the Nepali Maoists must be brought to the mainstream and should not be treated just as terrorists.

The US ambassador to Nepal, James F Moriarty, has been at the forefront advocating the US policy, which is appeasing the beleaguered King Gyanendra. The US administration has been critical of efforts to engage Maoists, especially the 12-point agreement between the seven parties and Maoists reached in November last year.

Indian sources now say that the visit of the Pentagon team is taking the US policy a step closer to .resuming military supplies, “which would embolden the monarch and would be a serious setback to our efforts to restore democracy,” says a senior official.

“What do you gain by giving material to the Royal Nepal Army? Some more people would be killed and then the Americans will go home,” says Deb Mukherjee, former Indian ambassador to Nepal. “It will not solve the Nepal problem.”

India should either keep their mouth shut or take actions maintianing tighter security in boarders so that maoist do not get weapons. If india are so worried about nepalese getting killed they would not have been providing unofficial asylum to the maoist. What an hypocrite

Supply of arms to either side is not good in favor of our country.

Americans, Chinese or Indians have nothing to do with peace in our country. They are guided by what most safeguards their interest.

If the war keeps on going, they can sell more and more arms to Nepal. Some are selling to the maoists side and others are selling to government side.

Often we get to read that the maoists were arrested with Chinese made pistols. It seems that Chinese also has some role in it.

We have to request all friendly nations of Nepal to stop supplying arms to either of the warring forces.

Of course the US should send arms and ammo to Nepal immediately...why the hell is the US waiting for ?
More arms and ammo means there will be bigger and fiercier fights therefore more high drama and some exciting great actions.....I cant wait for some actions to take place.

there is a saying in Nepali " जस्तै लाई तेस्ताइ धिदो लाई निस्तै " Maoists got where they are today by terrorizing the country with their guns and violence. Unless you are a hardcore believer in Mao and are blinded to any other way of governance, no one in right state of mind will ever support Maoism. So, the only way to stop them from continuous barbarism is to give some of their own medicine. Another Nepali sayings comes to my mind "ईट को जवाफ प्थर". Gotta make these bunch of thugs a lesson for generation to come....there will be no forgiving NOR any compromising with the terrorists.

If anyone were to help us to wipe these terrorist from the country, I will personally applaud that move. Glad to see US live to its word on terrorism at home and abroad. UNCLE SAM RAWKS!!

P.S. No need to criticize the army and security forces, instead show graduate as they were only deployed after Maoist went on their killing spree. May god bless each and every वीर गोर्खालि !

Lately, RNA released press report quoting that since 2001 they have killed 8000 plus Maoists....

That's too much of wasting the bullets.... All they needed to do was release two silver bullets to down fug9ing top leaders... But things were surely more complex than we thought... probably that's why 8000 plus had to die from Maoists side and another 12000 died from non-Maoists side... what a waste of nepalese sons from both side... All due to those two fagoot culprit chuchche ass**holes

Friends, if you think that sending arms to Nepal would help eliminate the maoists, its just a day-dream. Americans removed Talibans from Afganistan but are Talibans finished? Americans and aliance dethroned Saddam from Iraq but could they restore peace in Iraq? Indira Gandhi crushed Naxalites in India but it re-appeared as PWG and still rocking Indian government.

Maoists are looking for safe landing. They have said that they have no problem keeping their arms under the supervision of UN or any other International Organization. Bringing them to mainstream politics is today's need.

What a shame that the RNA declares that they killed 8000 maoists...Anybody they killed are later declared as maoists. In Ramechhap, two 11 year and 8 year olds who were frightened to see the arm loaded soldiers and had ran away, were killed by army. They were later announced as "terrorist killed in counter attack". In Dhading..army killed the Chepang road construction labors and all they were declared maoists. In the forest of Hetauda, even a government employee-Forest Ranger was killed and he was declared maoists..In one of the western village, the security forces burnt the whole village for the reason that the maoists took shelter in that village...So, not all people killed are maoists.

I think Nepal will benefit immensely if the US Embassy in Kathmandu were to be forcibly closed down by democratic forces of the country. Any ideas?

this is sooo hypocritical.
when gyanendra took over nepal in magh 19, US condemned it and called for restoraction of democarcy and its ideals and blah blah. ani it also critisized the king for his tyrannical measures. tara ahile chahi they are handing out weapons for RNA so its easier to defeat maosists
ki ta all this time US was only pretending to critisize the kin ki ta US feels threatned by the new political development in nepal i.e. the understanding between the party and maoists.

Bush has to sell his arms. Bush and Dick Cheny are the biggest stake holders of the arm industry of USA. Bush has even a relative in Italy - owning an arm factory-called Berta and its learnt that Nepali soldiers are carrying Berta Guns.

So what the heck Bush has to worry about peace in Nepal? He has only to worry about only selling arms. This is the only reason why US ambassador wants to foil the 12 point understanding of SPA and the maoists. US doesn't want that Maoists logically put the arms down. US wants that maoist keep up their war, so that they can keep on selling arms to Nepal government.

Read Dadi Ram Sapkota's story from Paris about Bush's connection with Italian Arm manufacturer.
